Jaguars sign Evan Engram in NFL free agency

Deal: 1-year, $9 million

Grade: B-

The first of many Jaguars moves, it seems as though Jacksonville is hoping to build as good of a team around Trevor Lawrence as early as possible. One of the smaller moves made was adding former pro bowl tight end Evan Engram. While the Jaguars had a clear need for a tight-end upgrade, the Engram move doesn’t scream amazing to me.

Engram was one of the brightest receiving tight ends at one point in time. He was nearly impossible to cover due to his speed. Injuries have taken a toll though, and Engram has been far less effective of a receiving threat in recent years. While part of his regression was due to the offense around him flailing, he also seemed to just disappear at times.

Based on his recent play, 9 million a season is a bit much for the veteran. That said, the Jaguars protect themselves by only signing him to a one-year deal. If his regression continues Jacksonville can move on with almost no penalty. It is a low-risk, potentially high-reward deal. That said, I will be surprised to see Engram be nothing more than an average option in the Jaguars’ offense.
