Baker Mayfield published an open letter to fans amid intensifying trade rumors on March 15. Here are four teams to watch as trade talk ramps up
Cleveland Browns QB Baker Mayfield has been the subject of trade whispers ever since the team exercised his fifth-year option instead of offering him a long-term extension.
Those whispers have turned into full-blown yelling and screaming after the QB, 26, published a letter on his Twitter account thanking Cleveland fans for embracing him and his family.
“I have no clue what happens next,” Mayfield wrote. “Which is the meaning behind the silence I have had during the duration of this process. This is not a message with hidden meaning. This is strictly to thank the city of Cleveland for embracing my family and me.”
The former No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft has had his share of ups and downs as the starting quarterback for the Browns. He’s had to deal with plenty off the field, too.
Mayfield’s wife, Emily, made it known that he faced death threats from fans on social media after his team lost to the Green Bay Packers on Christmas Day 2021.
The scrutiny Baker Mayfield has faced on and off the field, coupled with a perceived lack of investment eventually led the former Heisman Trophy winner to make it known he just might be ready to move on.
Our friends at Dawg Pound Daily mentioned recently that Mayfield was looking forward to being a free agent after this season.
He might not have to wait very long, as Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports. The Browns are reportedly very much in the Deshaun Watson trade sweepstakes and even met with the quarterback March 15 in Texas.
Even if the Browns lose out in acquiring Watson, they could still trade Mayfield, per Mary Kay Cabot.
Let’s take a look at the four teams who will likely be in the mix to acquire the four-year veteran from the Browns.
