NFL Offseason: Seahawks, Packers lead worst moves made so far in 2022
As the main wave of free agency concludes, there have been both great moves and not-so-great moves made by teams. Which moves stand out as the worst?
Every year during free agency, teams make great moves that end up paying off in the long run while other teams make extremely questionable moves that they regret.
This year is no different. Teams have spent a ton of money, signing a bunch of free agents to try and fill their team’s holes. Other teams have played it safe, not spending much money at all and perhaps letting the free agency board fall to them.
Notable moves that appear to be among the best would include the Denver Broncos trading for Russell Wilson, the Raiders trading for Davante Adams, the Chargers adding J.C. Jackson and Khalil Mack, and the Bengals adding quality players to their offensive line.
There have been some not-so-good moves, though that I think these teams are going to end up regretting in the long run.
So, which moves have been the worst among free agency thus far?
Worst moves of the 2022 NFL offseason thus far
1. Seahawks trading Russell Wilson
The Seattle Seahawks made a significant, franchise-altering move by trading Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, ending their 10-year run with their Hall of Fame signal-caller.
Many people across the league saw the writing on the wall. Both Wilson and head coach Pete Carroll seemed to butt heads on what kind of offensive philosophy to stick with, and the team’s lack of success surely contributed to Wilson’s departure.
What makes this even worse is the compensation they got back. They were not able to net any significant player upgrade. They traded for Shelby Harris, a quality defensive tackle who is approaching the wrong side of 30, a backup quarterback in Drew Lock, and a decent tight end in Noah Fant.
They were also able to net two first and two second-round picks, so the draft pick compensation wasn’t exactly spectacular.
The Seahawks are now stuck in a bit of an interesting situation. They have an old coach and veteran general manager, but they don’t seem to be headed towards a rebuild, especially with their other free agent additions.
No one really knows what’s going to happen with the Seahawks, but we do know that the Denver Broncos now have a Super Bowl-winning quarterback on their roster.
