Some fans of the Washington Commanders are getting frustrated with the team’s lack of urgency in free agency. There are still plenty of solid moves they can make though.
It didn’t take long for the Washington Commanders to make headlines when they made a trade for quarterback Carson Wentz. When it comes to free agency though, they’ve been insanely quiet.
So far, we’ve seen a lot of re-signings. That’s nice, but it’s not improving the team from last year. Meanwhile, we’ve seen Brandon Scherff leave in free agency. Landon Collins was cut, Matthew Ioannidis was cut, and Ereck Flowers was cut (among a few others). So that’s both starting guards, and with Tim Settle leaving via free agency – the two top backup defensive linemen as well.
Washington Commanders have opportunities to add more
Washington’s only splash so far has been signing guard Andrew Norwell. This was massive though, as it filled one of those two guard spots. Wes Schweitzer can absolutely take on the other spot (or maybe even Saahdiq Charles can make a bid for it).
They also added Efe Obada, who had 3.5 sacks last season. But the defensive end doesn’t really help on the interior like Ioannidis or Settle would.
This has all led to a lot of Commanders fans being a little irritated with the team. Such a lack of movement after trading for a QB doesn’t make a lot of sense. Clearly, you’re trying to win now, so what’s going on?
The excuse everyone is expecting is that the Wentz addition crushed the salary cap. While that was true, all the cuts freed up some space. The good news though, is that there is still plenty of talent for the Commanders to try and scoop up. And it’s not like we’re only talking bottom-tier guys.
At cornerback, you still have Stephon Gilmore and Joe Haden out there. Kyle Fuller and Trae Waynes are available as well. Linebacker is headlined by Bobby Wagner while the safety position has Tyrann Mathieu. Finally, wide receiver is loaded with talent like Julio Jones, Jarvis Landry, T.Y. Hilton, and Will Fuller. And those are just a few of the names.
There are a lot of defensive linemen that could be signed to add some depth as well.
The Washington Commanders have been pretty quiet in free agency so far. But that doesn’t mean they won’t make a move. Adding a talented veteran receiver could make a big difference. Wagner or another linebacker would absolutely improve the team in a major way. And one of the top defensive backs would clean up that position as well.
Just because it hasn’t been done yet, doesn’t mean it’s not in the works. Be patient. There’s still time for the Commanders to get the players they want.
