The main wave of the NFL free agency period is over. Which teams quietly made smart and perhaps underrated free agency signings?
This was one of the more exciting free agency periods in a long time. We saw outrageous, league-altering trades, unlikely signings, and everything in between.
As we head into the last few waves of free agency, teams will look to backfill their roster with quality depth options before the NFL draft. Some teams will stay put and wait until they see who they draft.
Looking back on all of the free agency moves made thus far, there are some that stick out, but not in a good way.
Every year, teams overpay for player(s) and it usually comes back to bite them. Even the most well-run franchises go through this.
This year, I think the Jacksonville Jaguars took the award for the “overpaid in free agency” category.
However, I’ve identified three signings that stick out to me as being the most underrated, for multiple reasons.
The first reason could be the team got an amazing deal for the player, for whatever reason.
Secondly, the player themselves is simply underrated. Or, it could be a good signing because of a perfect scheme fit. In a perfect world, it’s all three.
So, which free agency signings have been the most underrated thus far?
Three underrated NFL free agency signings after two weeks
1. Morgan Moses RT —–> Ravens
Morgan Moses began his career in Washington, where he played for seven seasons.
In 2021, he was a 17 game starter for the New York Jets.
Moses is by no means elite, but he’s very clearly just a tier below that. He hasn’t missed a start since 2015, his second season, and excels overall as a right tackle.
Morgan Moses could have signed for more than $5 million per year, but he decided to perhaps take a bit of a hometown discount and sign with the Ravens.
Moses is from Richmond, Virginia, went to Virginia, and spent most of his career with Washington.
Being presented with an opportunity to sign with a team and return to the DMV area probably made a ton of sense for Moses.
Besides the geographical benefit, Morgan Moses stays on the field, and he excels at run blocking more than pass blocking, which is something the run-first Ravens should benefit from.
Being that their entire team dealt with injuries in 2021, signing a savvy, solid veteran like Moses who stays on the field and is a scheme fit makes a lot of sense.
Getting him for cheap is even better.
