Matt Eberflus and his M&M philosophy

Another thing that Poles and Eberflus are locked together on is their philosophy on players, especially linemen.

Eberflus talks about M&M a lot — as in motor and meanness. He wants linemen who have a high motor and are revving all the time. He also wants those mean guys. Those guys protect their quarterbacks and won’t take any gruff from anyone. When you have a lot of M&M guys on a roster, the opposition knows it’s in for a long day when it goes up against the Chicago Bears.

"I have a principle that I use and I’ve used it for a while for the lines. It’s the M&M principle. It’s about having a great motor and about being mean, and that’s what you need on your lines. The defensive line needs that and the offensive line needs that. You’ve got to finish… (T)hat’s the kind of guys we want to acquire."

The Bears feel that they have that with one of their linemen signings — center Lucas Patrick. He has a mean streak in him and he likes to show it. He is an undrafted player and has played like he’s on the edge of getting cut whenever he is on the field. Having a guy like that as the center really helps someone like Fields.

The Bears’ offensive line was pushed around too many times over the past decade. It’s time that the meanness came back. The Chicago Bears need to show other teams that the Monsters of the Midway aren’t only on defense, but on offense as well.

One player Eberflus pointed out as a big M&M guy who doesn’t play the line is running back David Montgomery. He feels Montgomery personifies that principle. He called Montgomery serious, a pro, and a worker.

It is nice that a new head coach sees and validates the skills a player has. Montgomery has always been that type of player and it’ll be interesting to see how he shines with Eberflus and Getsy.

It will be great to see how this staff works together. If Eberflus and Getsy work together on the offense, and Eberflus and Poles are in agreement, we should be seeing more sustained success in the future. But remember, that future won’t start until 2023.
