Will the Baltimore Ravens use Tyler Huntley more this season?
Lamar Jackson and the Ravens are working on coming to terms on a new contract after the 2022 season. Will Baltimore give Tyler Huntley more opportunities to shine before that time comes?
Quarterback changes in the AFC North have controlled most of the division’s headlines during the off-season. The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Cleveland Browns have both made decisions to move forward with new leadership under center.
While their division rivals welcome in new talent, the Ravens are working to retain their assets. Lamar Jackson’s rookie contract will give the Pro Bowl quarterback an option to shop for a new destination at the end of the 2022 season.
Unlike their divisional opponents, the Ravens are equipped with a solid number two quarterback. Former Utah University dual-threat option Tyler Huntley has shown John Harbaugh and his coaching staff that he is willing to take charge at any moment.
When Lamar Jackson experienced a season-ending ankle injury in 2021, the second-year quarterback took his place and efficiently ran the offense.
Huntley accumulated 1,290 yards of total offense in his seven games under center. His five combined touchdowns showed glimpses of what the Ravens’ offense could look like in the future.
Tyler Huntley is only one play away
Replacing Lamar Jackson is hard to imagine for fans who attend M&T Bank Stadium. His influence on their style of football is has been the source of their most recent success. Since joining the league in 2018, Jackson has racked up over ten thousand yards of total offense.
His ability to create plays with his legs makes Jackson one of the league’s most explosive players. Obtaining one thousand yards on the ground has become a regular for Baltimore’s shifty playmaker. His work extending plays helped the Ravens become one of the league’s best rushing offenses.
Improving as a passer is the latest task for Baltimore’s current starter. Turning the football over has become a theme for Jackson as of late. Lamar only threw three interceptions during his rookie season. In 2021 he tallied 13. Targets like Mark Andrews and Rashod Bateman should make completing passes easier but instead, Jackson has struggled to excel through the air.
The upcoming season will determine how Baltimore’s front office will deal with their quarterback dilemma.
Unlike the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns, the Ravens can only improve from where they are currently. The franchise has played behind both of their potential starters for the next few years to come. If the Ravens are uncertain of Lamar Jackson’s future early, Tyler Huntley could make an early-season appearance.
