NFL Free agency: Three best remaining moves teams can make
While most of free agency is behind us, there are still a few moves that teams can make to put the finishing touches on their rosters.
As we turn to the 2022 NFL Draft, the free agency period has been settling down for a while. However, there are still a ton of very high-quality free agents yet to find a new home and potential trades that can still happen.
Much of the activity during this wave of free agency is teams signing players to fill some depth positions on their rosters.
As most of us know, teams with the best depth tend to go far during a season.
The Buffalo Bills perhaps have the best depth of any team in the NFL. They are several players deep at a few positions and continued this with their own strong free agency period.
Expect some of the biggest named players still on the market to find new homes quickly after the NFL draft.
Looking across the league, there are three remaining moves that three teams can make that will put a huge bow on their already strong rosters.
NFL Free Agency: Three best remaining moves
1. Tyrann Mathieu to the Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos have won the NFL offseason with their acquisition of Russell Wilson. They’ve also made moves to keep their 2021 third-ranked scoring defense in the same spot.
The signings of Randy Gregory, D.J. Jones, and K’Waun Williams should all help Denver’s defense remain near the top of the NFL. However, Denver does have a need along the defense that they would be wise to fill.
Kareem Jackson, one of their starting safeties the past three seasons is old and a free agent. Replacing Jackson with Tyrann Mathieu, who is better and a few years younger makes a ton of sense.
Mathieu clearly is not being brought back to Kansas City, as they signed Justin Reid to take his place. Mathieu is set to enter his age-30 season, so he isn’t necessarily old.
He’d also get to play with the best safety in the league in Justin Simmons, and a Simmons/Mathieu duo would again not only give the Denver Broncos the best safety duo in the NFL but would yet again give them the strongest secondary in the NFL to compete with the rest of the AFC’s loaded teams.
