New Orleans Saints worst move in 2022 NFL Free Agency

Jameis Winston contract

The New Orleans Saints’ 2022 offseason is being vastly underrated simply for the fact that they were able to go from a $70+ million hole against the salary cap to having one of the more favorable cap situations in the entire league.

With that being said, part of all that restructuring was necessary because otherwise, the Saints wouldn’t have been able to solidify their quarterback position, at least in terms of bringing in someone who has been a proven starter in the league to lead a veteran-laden team.

Jameis Winston was on a torrid pace last season before tearing his ACL, so it’s tough to be too harsh on the Saints for the contract they gave him, but Winston’s two-year, $28 million deal with $21 million guaranteed feels more reactionary than proactive.

Especially coming off of that torn ACL, you would think teams would have approached Winston with a major “buyer beware” tag and it seems that was the case. In the early goings of free agency, where were all of Winston’s offers?

Why did the Steelers not try to get him? Panthers? Anyone else?

The Saints may have simply been bidding against themselves and Winston is now being paid pretty good money as a result.
