Los Angeles Chargers worst move in 2022 NFL Free Agency

Not getting Justin Herbert a right tackle

By the time the Chargers’ 2021 season ended in a game for the ages against the Las Vegas Raiders, it looked like Justin Herbert was wearing an alternate uniform.

The only issue is, the Chargers don’t have any green alternates.

The protection for Herbert, especially at the right tackle position, was a little more than suspect over the course of the 2021 season. The Chargers had signed Bryan Bulaga to a free agent deal but that didn’t work out for either party.

As of April 4, the Chargers have passed on all free agent tackle options. Perhaps they feel confident that, with the 17th overall pick, they will be able to find a plug-and-play starter just like they did in the 2021 NFL Draft with Rashawn Slater.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but perhaps a little insurance in free agency would be wise.

The Chargers can’t afford for one of their tackles to go down at this moment in time, and by “one of their tackles” I’m assuming they use a top pick on the tackle position.

Passing on players like Morgan Moses at $5 million per season could wind up biting a lot of teams in the butt over the course of a full season.

There are still some veteran options out there, but the Chargers’ options are dwindling rather quickly.
