Denver Broncos 2022 mock draft, first pick: Leo Chenal, LB, Wisconsin
If you have read my previous mock drafts, you know that I absolutely love Leo Chenal. Not only does Chenal address a need of the Broncos in terms of linebackers, but he also fits the types of linebackers that the Broncos might want, and he’s also a quality linebacker on top of all of it.
In terms of linebackers, well, the Broncos don’t really have any or any quality ones for that matter. Josey Jewell is the one linebacker who has been solid for the Broncos, but outside of him, Denver will be playing the likes of Alex Singleton, Justin Strnad, and Baron Browning.
While the Broncos’ linebacking group isn’t the worst in the NFL, they certainly need some help.
One thing that makes things very interesting in terms of how the Broncos will build out their defense in the draft, is the singing of Ejiro Evero as defensive coordinator.
Before he landed with the Broncos, Evero spent time with the Los Angeles Rams and was credited with helping turn the Rams into one of the more formidable defenses in the current NFL. Since Evero has taken over the defensive coordinator role for the Broncos, he has made it clear he wants to blitz and that he wants to put pressure on the QB, which is perfect for Chenal.
While at Wisconsin, Leo Chenal made a name for himself by being one of the best blitzing linebackers in college football, while also being very physical. When Chenal gets going downhill, it’s hard to stop him as there have been multiple times on film where Chenal moves offensive lineman backward. Chenal has also shown the ability to make some great open-field tackles
Sure, Chenal isn’t the greatest in terms of pass coverage, but if Evero will be blitzing a lot, Chenal is only going to thrive and will end up being a great linebacker in this Broncos defense.
Other Players Considered: Christian Harris, Trey McBride, Tariq Woolen
