Denver Broncos mock draft, 2nd pick: Trey McBride, TE, Colorado State

896. Pick Analysis. Tight End. 2. player. Scouting Report. Colorado State. Trey McBride

As it stands right now, the Broncos have a major weakness at the tight end position. The Broncos will currently be working with Albert Okwuegbunam, Eric Tomlinson, and Shaun Beyer.

Of the three, Albert O is the only one who has shown any ability on an NFL field as Eric Tomlison has bounced around the NFL, and Beyer was an undrafted free agent signing out of Iowa by the Broncos last season.

Denver did have Noah Fant last season, who would be the clear starting tight end in Denver, but with the trade to Seattle, they now need some tight end help.

Denver signed Ejiro Evero to be their defensive coordinator which will certainly shape how the team builds their defense, but the Broncos have also brought in a new head coach in Nathanial Hackett. Before Hackett landed with the Broncos, he was the offensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers, and before that, he was with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

While with Jacksonville and Green Bay, one thing became clear with Hackett, and that’s the fact that he likes to use tight ends in his offense, and not just one, but multiple.

What also makes things very interesting, is the fact that the Broncos’ newest offensive coordinator, Justin Outten, was the tight ends coach for the Green Bay Packers while Hackett was there, which shows that the tight end position will be utilized by the Broncos.

While at Colorado State, McBride was a massive part of the offense and was essentially the focal point of the Colorado State offense. One thing that became clear while watching McBride was the fact that he had some speed.

While he didn’t do the 40-yard dash at the combine, he did do the 40 at his pro day as he finished with a 4.56 40 yard dash. Not only that, but McBride has run a decently diverse route tree.

While McBride has some juice to get past linebackers, he won’t be shaking many guys off with his dynamism. McBride also tends to let defenders get too physical with him along his route.

With the coaching pieces that the Broncos have brought in, it’s clear that the tight end position will play a decent role in the Denver offense. Being that the Broncos will be using the tight end position frequently, they will need a quality tight end, especially one who can get down the field, something that Russell Wilson likes to target.

Other Players Considered: Jalen Tolbert, Josh Paschal, Greg Dulcich
