2022 NFL Draft: Seattle Seahawks trade for Baker Mayfield

The Seahawks shocked the NFL world by trading Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos for a haul. If the season started today, Drew Lock would be the starter — Baker Mayfield is the better option.

We’ve seen what Lock can do as a starting quarterback on a team with weapons and a running game — he wasn’t that good. Enter Baker Mayfield, who is a polarizing figure himself, but he’s proven how good he can be.

Before the shoulder injury, Mayfield was a season removed from his best season. In 2020, Mayfield threw for 3,563 yards, 26 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions.

He helped the Browns franchise to their first-ever playoff victory. In some ways, he’s a poor man’s Russell Wilson. He’s not the same athlete, but inside he can make guys miss. He has a good arm and can make plays outside the pocket.

The Browns have to trade Mayfield, so it shouldn’t take any more than a third-round pick. Worst-case scenario, they trade DK Metcalf for Mayfield straight up, but that’s not a good idea. Keeping Metcalf should be their top priority.

Adding Mayfield should be second. Mayfield seems like he and Pete Carroll will match in terms of fire and intensity. This is a move the Seahawks must make.
