It’s been a tough four-year stretch for the NFL team based in Charlotte. Could the Carolina Panthers add a few more pieces before April’s draft?

Back in 1995, both the Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars took the field and expanded the National Football League from 28 to 30 teams.

Both franchises would have some immediate success. In 1996, in their second campaigns, both reached their respective conference championship games.

While the Jaguars had their moments in the early days of their existence, it’s the Panthers that have reached the Super Bowl twice. The latest appearance came in 2015, a 24-10 loss to the Broncos. It was during a stretch in which the club made four playoff appearances in a five-year stretch.

These days, Carolina is in the midst of a run that has seen the club post four straight losing seasons. The Panthers have won exactly five games each of the past three years – the last two under head coach Matt Rhule.

This past year, the team got off to a surprising 3-0 start. But the team dropped 12 of their final 14 outings and enter 2022 with a seven-game losing streak. Their 5-12 record put them in the NFC South basement for the second time in three seasons.

As of this writing, no team in the league currently has more cap space than the Panthers (via Spotrac). So could the team add some more veteran talent over the next week or so? Here are five players who could aid the team.

Which free agents could still help the Carolina Panthers?

5. DE Brent Urban (Dallas Cowboys)

Defensive end Brent Urban saw his 2021 season cut short by a triceps injury. Originally a fourth-round draft choice of the Baltimore Ravens in 2014, he has bounced around the league in recent seasons.

The 6’7”, 295-pound performer could add depth to a defensive front that has a lot of young talent in ends Brian Burns and Yetur Gross-Matos. The Panthers did sign former Commanders defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis this year after he was released by Washington.
