Green Bay Packers mock draft starts with a big-time receiver

The biggest glaring issue the Green Bay Packers have currently is at the receiver position. As it stands right now, the Packers starting outside receivers would likely be Allen Lazard and Sammy Watkins, with Randall Cobb being the starting slot receiver.

Lazard is fine, Watkins has had some moments, and early on in his career Cobb was a quality receiver, but as it stands right now, this receiver group is a bottom three-receiver group in the NFL.

If one of Lazard, Watkins, or Cobb goes down with an injury at some point this season, the Packers will be forced to use one of Amari Rodgers, Malik Taylor, or Juwann Winfree, all three of which likely shouldn’t be getting serious starting wide receiver snaps, at least at this point in their NFL careers.

Something that I find very interesting with how the Packers approach the draft in terms so receivers, is how poor they have drafted and how few draft resources they have put in receivers.

In the past 5 drafts (2017-2021) the Packers have drafted six receivers, those receivers being DeAngelo Yancy, Malachi Dupre, J’Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St Brown, and Amari Rodgers. The only receiver of those six who has made a decent NFL impact has been MVS.

While the Packers have had few receivers who have made an impact in recent years, one possible reason they may have happened is because of how few draft resources the Packers have used on receivers.

Of the previously mentioned receivers, the highest-drafted one has been Rodgers, as the Packers took him in the 3rd round. With the Packers having few quality receivers and lacking serious draft resource allocation towards the receiver position, I think it’s high time they take one.

One of my absolute favorite things about Chris Olave is his route running ability. Olave is such a precise and clean route runner, just a route runner beyond his years. Pair along his route running ability with the fact that he has some serious speed that you need to account for, and you have yourself a high-level receiver prospect.

While Olave has a lot to love, he’s not the biggest receiver in the world. He’s on the thinner side of things and has to use his hands to keep his body clean to win. Unlike his Ohio State receiving counterpart in Garrett Wilson, Olave doesn’t make a lot of guys miss in the open field.

Green Bay desperately needs help at the receiver position, and Olave will offer that immediately. Olave will give Rodgers a young receiver who can test defenses down the field and should earn Rodgers’s trust with his ability to get open and his quality hands.
