EDGE Rusher — Dominique Robinson, 5th Round, #174

Here is another high-value pick for Poles and the Chicago Bears. Dominique Robinson is a converted wide receiver and he definitely puts his athletic skills to good use.

Robinson explodes off the snap. Being a former receiver, his initial steps are quick and he uses that to get past slow blockers. He also has the athleticism and bend to make the edge smaller for him.

Since he converted to an edge rusher, Robinson is still a work in progress. He needs to bulk up a little more and he needs to add countermoves to his repertoire.

This is the good thing about a rebuild, however (though Poles doesn’t want to call it that) — the Bears don’t need him to be ready now. They can wait and develop him.

Being a former receiver, Robinson has a sudden change of direction that can really hurt blockers, especially unathletic ones. Once he steps hard one way and explodes the other, those blockers will find themselves trying to block air.

Robinson might be the reason why Robert Quinn wasn’t traded. Teams around the league inquired about him but the Bears weren’t shopping him.

They may have his replacement on the roster now. They just need to develop his game. Pairing Robinson with Trevis Gipson could give the Bears a lethal pass-rushing duo of the future.
