Free agency and the 2022 NFL Draft have now passed, and I’m still left wondering…what is Ryan Poles going to do to surround Justin Fields?

A third-round pick (Velus Jones Jr.) is probably not going to cut it.

The Bears let Allen Robinson walk in free agency. They didn’t go out and sign any of the top offensive linemen in free agency.

They traded Khalil Mack.

It wasn’t a popular start to the offseason to begin with for Chicago, but then they didn’t have a first-round pick because of the Justin Fields trade last year.

Even armed with two picks in the second round, the Bears went with defensive backs. There is nothing wrong with Kyler Gordon or Jaquan Brisker. In fact, I think both are going to be really good players.

But the Bears hired a defensive coach, they were conservative in free agency, and they went with defensive players with their top two picks.

We can complain all we want, I suppose, but what about the picks?

Kyler Gordon and Jaquan Brisker are going to help give the Bears an enviable, young secondary for years to come. I love Gordon’s versatility and athletic traits and I think he’s a starter from Day 1, even if he starts out as a nickel.

Velus Jones Jr., if he hits, has a chance to really make Ryan Poles look smart in this class. He’s built like a running back and has blazing speed. The Bears obviously think extremely highly of him and didn’t think his age (Jones will be 25 this year) was anything worth dropping him down a round or two in his overall grade.

I love the offensive line investments on Day 3 for the Bears and I think a couple of them have a really good chance to hit. The interior players may have a better shot at immediate playing time but Braxton Jones is a high-upside player at the tackle position with tremendous athleticism and length.
