7. Cortez Davis, CB, Hawaii

The Denver Broncos’ 2022 NFL Draft class had a number of defensive backs already and they further strengthened the cornerback room after the Draft with the acquisition of Hawaii cornerback Cortez Davis.

At 5-foot-10, 181 pounds, Davis is limited with his size but his productivity was solid at Hawaii. His other pre-draft metrics weren’t impressive but Davis has good tape at Hawaii with 97 total tackles, 31 passes broken up, eight tackles for loss, and a pair of interceptions. He also added three forced fumbles.

If you project Davis as a nickel at the next level, I think you begin to see the appeal. You don’t rack up 31 pass breakups by accident or mistake.

6. Kana’i Mauga, LB, USC

Mauga finished his career at USC with 205 total tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, three interceptions, and six passes defended.

The Denver Broncos gave him a pretty decent signing bonus after not selecting any linebackers in the 2022 NFL Draft and given his production this past season (career-best 91 total tackles) he might have a shot if he can prove his worth on special teams.

With the coaching staff change at USC, Mauga opted to leave school early (forsaking his extra year of eligibility due to the pandemic) rather than play for Lincoln Riley and his staff.

Ultimately, while Mauga may not have been drafted, he landed in a good spot with the Broncos where off-ball linebackers might have a legitimate shot at making the team.
