Cincinnati Bengals: Akili Smith, QB
Cade McNown wasn’t the only quarterback in the hyped-up 1999 class that failed to meet expectations. Tim Couch went first to the Cleveland Browns and while he never made it, a lot of that could have been due to the fact he was taking over under center for an expansion team.
There was also McNown at No. 12 who lasted just two seasons with the Chicago Bears — one pick after Daunte Culpepper who did have plenty of success early in his career. Still, the most successful in the draft was easily Donovan McNabb, who was booed by Eagles fans when they took him at No. 2.
Following the McNabb selection, the Cincinnati Bengals took Akili Smith out of Oregon. Smith lasted four seasons with the Bengals but he was primarily a reserve and started just 17 games — 11 of which came in his second season.
Smith finished with just three wins and 14 losses while completing only 46.6 percent of his attempts. He also had an abysmal 5-to-13 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
What makes this pick look even worse is the fact that Cincinnati turned down an offer from the New Orleans Saints — who wanted Ricky Williams — which would have netted them nine draft picks. Clearly, they could have gotten better production from almost any of those nine picks had they made the move.
