No. 21 NFL quarterback in 2022: Mac Jones, New England Patriots

The New England Patriots have to be absolutely thrilled with the way things turned out in the 2021 offseason.

They went absolutely bonkers in free agency last year, spending more money than they ever had before in a single offseason by a wide margin.

They stayed put smack in the middle of the first round of last year’s draft and wound up getting their preferred quarterback in Mac Jones, who ended up making the Pro Bowl and getting the Patriots back to the playoffs his rookie season.

Questions about in year two for Jones, however.

Josh McDaniels is gone. The infrastructure of the Patriots’ offense will likely stay in place and there are coaches who know football well enough to call plays but won’t it be odd to see Matt Patricia or Joe Judge out there scheming offense?

That’s what we’re facing in 2022.

The Patriots took a shot on a couple of real wild cards at receiver to help Jones’ production as a passer, trading for former Dolphins first-round pick DeVante Parker and drafting Tyquan Thornton out of Baylor and his sub-4.3 speed in round two.

Jones should be set up for decent success as a sophomore but I’m skeptical of the Patriots’ offensive brain trust at this point.
