NFL trade no. 9: Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders

Was this really one of the “best” trades of 2022?

Time will tell.

The more I think about it, the less I dislike this trade by the Commanders. The price to acquire Wentz was high enough — the Commanders sent over a pair of third-round picks and swapped second-round picks to get him — to not like the optics initially, especially with the collapse we’d seen from Wentz and the Colts in 2021.

However, Wentz is not yet 30. He was the second overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft and has tremendous talent.

He’s coming off of a season in which he threw 27 touchdown passes. Believe it or not, that was good for 10th best in the NFL last season.

We all know the Commanders were desperate to add a quarterback this offseason. What team without one wouldn’t be?

The issue was, the Commanders wore their desperation on their sleeve. They paid more for Wentz than they may have otherwise had to if they had played it a little cooler.

Still, getting Wentz in the fold could prove huge for this team. We know the Commanders are going to play strong defense for Ron Rivera.

Their offensive weaponry has substantially improved. They have a sneaky good offensive line.

I think trading for Wentz could drastically change the Washington offense in 2022 for the better.
