NFL trade no. 7: Khalil Mack to the Los Angeles Chargers

If there was any doubt before the 2022 NFL offseason, there isn’t anymore.

The Los Angeles Chargers are all-in.

The Chargers are doing their best to take advantage of having a superstar quarterback on a rookie contract, and one of the big moves they made in 2022 was trading for pass rusher and former NFL Defensive Player of the Year Khalil Mack.

Mack’s overall pass rush productivity numbers (sacks, pressures, hits) are down substantially from his time with the Raiders and his early years with the Chicago Bears, but he’s still a high-impact player.

Not only that, but he’s going to a defensive system he has thrived in before.

Brandon Staley was an assistant on Vic Fangio’s staff in 2017-18, crossing paths with Mack obviously for a year there (2018) before heading off to Denver as an assistant with Fangio once more.

Mack was once one of the premier defenders in the entire NFL. Can he regain that kind of magic?

Playing opposite Joey Bosa has to have every Chargers fan absolutely giddy. This team could go from having a rather porous defense to having one of the toughest defenses overnight.
