Dallas Cowboys trade piece No. 2: Trysten Hill, DT

Back in 2019, the Dallas Cowboys didn’t have a Round 1 pick as they had traded that to the Oakland Raiders (now the Las Vegas Raiders) in exchange for Amari Cooper. Primary decision-maker and cap-lover Stephen Jones famously said the Cowboys would be watching film of Cooper during Round 1 since they had no picks.

Hindsight is always 20-20 but the dudes in the war room probably should have continued their scouting because they completely botched their first pick that season.

Once they were finally on the clock at No. 58 overall, they had their pick of every safety in the draft — and there were some good safeties available including Juan Thornhill and Taylor Rapp. Or, they could have really bolstered the receiving corps and added D.K. Metcalf or Diontae Johnson.

Dallas didn’t go with any of these players. Instead, they le8 defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli influence them to pick Trsyten Hill — who was a backup in his final season at UCF. And it didn’t take long for Hill to get on Marinelli’s bad side as he hardly saw the field as a rookie.

It hasn’t been much better under Mike McCarthy and company as Hill has struggled with injury and inconsistency to play in 11 games over the past two seasons.

Looking ahead to 2022, it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see the Cowboys move on. And while Hill has been a bust as a Round 2 pick, some team could be willing to give up a sixth-or-seventh round selection for his services ‚— which would be better than nothing.
