There are still many quality free agents left on the market. Let’s build ourselves the best possible offense with these free agents for 2022.
The 2022 NFL free agency period is about over. There was a ton of movement within the league, especially with trades. Even though the biggest moves are done, there is still talent left on the market, especially on offense.
At this point in the offense, the most likely scenario we’ll begin to see is teams signing free agents when they suffer an injury.
Most teams have filled out their rosters at the beginning of free agency and into the draft, so if teams make any more remaining moves, we can expect those to perhaps be later in the offseason as the activities pick up, which is when we’d usually see offseason injuries.
I want to take a fun twist with this piece and build an offense with remaining free agents.
It seems like, every year, there’s been talk amongst the NFL crowd that there should be an expansion team.
It would be interesting to see how an expansion draft would work in the NFL, and I think giving that new team the first shot at free agency would be a good deal.
Or, we can just use this makeshift offense as the “official” NFL expansion team.
So, which remaining free agents can we build an offense with for the 2022 season?
Building an offense with remaining NFL free agents
Quarterback – Ryan Fitzpatrick
To be fair, the free agent quarterback market is a bit weak, obviously. There’s a ton of high-quality QB talent in the NFL, but not enough to go around.
The remaining QBs in free agency would barely make any of the current active rosters, but there is a clear player here who is above the rest, and that’s Ryan Fitzpatrick.
The 39-year-old has been in the league since 2005 and has played for nine teams, an NFL record.
He’s an ideal backup QB. He’s incredibly smart, a very good locker room presence, and has had a few spurts during his career of very solid QB play.
I’d look for a team to sign him as we get closer to the beginning of the season, when/if a team suffers an injury to one of their top quarterbacks.
He’s got 223 career touchdown passes and nearly 35,000 yards.
If there was a Hall of Fame for backups, he’d be first ballot.
