Denver Broncos player no. 2: Alexander Johnson, LB

Under new defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero, the Denver Broncos are going to be playing even more nickel and dime packages than they did under Vic Fangio.

As is typically the case with just about every NFL team these days, the nickel package is the predominant package that teams use, even more than their base look.

Alexander Johnson had become a very solid base set linebacker for the Broncos, playing alongside Josey Jewell and proving his value as a run defender.

Unfortunately, he suffered a pectoral injury in the 2021 season and wasn’t able to truly put anything on tape for other teams to try and snatch him up early in the free agency process.

Now, he has been lingering in free agency, remaining unsigned into late May.

While an opportunity will almost certainly arise at some point for Johnson — maybe even back in Denver under the right circumstances — the Broncos were right to move on from him for the time being.

Jonas Griffith, a young player the team traded for in 2021, could be emerging as one of the team’s starting linebackers alongside Josey Jewell with better three-down abilities.

Johnson is very effective at playing the run, but he’s 30 going on 31 this year and is coming off of a season-ending injury.
