New Orleans Saints best move no. 4: Re-signing Jameis Winston

The New Orleans Saints missed out on the QB carousel this winter but could’ve done much worse than Re-signing Famous Jameis.

Most discussions about Winston start out talking about his 33 TD and 30 season back in 2019. 2021 was a much different story.

Winston was having a solid season before he was injured and missed the rest of the year. It’s easy to forget how good he was playing. Making good decisions and leading the team well.

The numbers won’t blow you away, but he was effective, especially considering the dearth of options at wide receiver.

In his 7 games, Winston threw 14 touchdowns to three interceptions. If we project that out to a full season that’s 34 touchdowns to 7 interceptions- nearly a 5 to 1 ratio.

For comparison, Matt Ryan and Jimmy Garappolo each threw 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season. Ryan was worth a 3rd round pick this offseason, and the Jimmy Garoppolo trade rumors never really go away. Winston is at least as good as these guys.

This offense struggled to maintain any consistency. Injuries to Michael Thomas, who missed the entire season, Alvin Kamara, Terron Armstead, Taysom Hill, and Tre’Quan Smith, all missed weeks.

With the skilled position additions and a healthy and stable quarterback situation, this offense has room to improve.

By all reports, Winston’s rehab is coming along well. Still, adding Andy Dalton to be the backup QB doesn’t hurt either. He’s not elite by any stretch, but he is a seasoned NFL QB who has seen plenty and can help solidify the QB room.
