3 NFL players in a make or break year in 2022 season
NFL players in a make or break year in 2022
2. Saquon Barkley, RB, New York Giants
Saquon Barkley was the top pick of the New York Giants back in the 2018 NFL Draft.
His first season was wildly successful, rushing for over 1,300 yards and finishing with just over 2,000 scrimmage yards.
In the three seasons since, he’s never hit 1,500 scrimmage yards, missing time during the last three seasons as well.
Barkley is entering his fifth season in the NFL. He’s playing this year on his fifth-year option and is entering his age-25 season.
There’s reason to believe that he could play his way into a nice contract extension from the Giants, but if Barkley misses extended time again and cannot produce at the level that his draft status would indicate, I would expect him to hit free agency, missing out on a huge chance to cash in and continuing to try and build a legacy.
Barkley has all the talent in the world. He’s got speed, size, wiggle, and strength. The injuries are the biggest roadblock here, but there’s no reason to believe he won’t be 100% as he enters 2022.
The other important thing here is that there is a new regime in New York, so there is little attachment to Barkley if he can’t have a great season.
