NFL record likely to fall No. 6: Interceptions

Current record: 14 — Night Train Lane in 1952

Richard “Night Train” Lane was a different breed. He set the record for the most interceptions in a single season way back in 1952 when he was a rookie for the Los Angeles Rams. Not only was the feat huge since he was a rookie, but he accomplished this in just 12 games.

From 1947 through 1960, the NFL had just 12 games before expanding to 14 ahead of the 1961 season. With how well Lane played as a rookie, he might have put even more picks on the board had he been given just two more games.

After getting three picks in his second season, the Rams traded Lane to the Chicago Cardinals, where he spent the next six seasons. He finished his career by playing six years with the Detroit Lions and had 68 career picks.

All these years later, no one has been able to top his insane feat. The only player to really come close since then was Lester Hayes in 1980 with the Raiders, who had 13.

Still, the record could fall and there are a couple of ballhawks who might be up to the task. First is Trevon Diggs, who tied the Dallas Cowboys record with 11 picks last year. There’s also J.C. Jackson who had 17 over the past two seasons with New England before heading to the Los Angeles Chargers this offseason.

Players most likely to break the record: Trevon Diggs, J.C. Jackson
