Jaguars (80) WR Kevin Austin pulls in a pass during Friday drills. The Jacksonville Jaguars held their first Rookie Minicamp on the turf of TIAA Bank Field Friday afternoon, May 13, 2022. Among those in attendance were the team’s 2022 draft picks. /

Another player who wasn’t expected to go undrafted was Notre Dame’s Kevin Austin, Jr. — and had he entered the draft in just about any other year, he probably wouldn’t have been.

It just so happened that the 2022 NFL Draft was one of the deepest in recent memory at wideout. That means players such as Austin got overlooked despite going off in 2021.

After a slow start to his career, thanks in large part to a foot injury, Austin ended up hauling in 48 receptions for 888 yards and seven touchdowns (while averaging 18.5 yards per catch). He then went to the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis and showed he had the size, speed, and athleticism to make it as a pro.

Austin ran a 4.49 in the 40-yard dash, hit 39 inches in the vertical jump, and added a 132-inch broad jump. He also has excellent size at 6-foot-2 and 200-pounds.

In the NFL, he will get a shot with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team that has added a lot of depth at wide receiver recently. They added Christian Kirk and Zay Jones (although they did overpay for Kirk) to join Laviska Shenault and Marvin Jones.

While none of those names are elite, it will still be hard for Austin to crack the 53-man roster. But he has a shot at doing so thanks to his mix of size and speed — two things that cannot be taught.
