Carolina Panthers: Marquan McCall, NT, Kentucky
Marquan McCall. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Kentucky. NT. player. 87. NT
It’s a pass-happy league anymore, which is why NFL teams are willing to pass on nose tackles. It’s a position that has been de-valued and teams can often find a big run-stuffer in the later rounds. Or, they might even be able to find them as undrafted free agents.
That could be the case for the Carolina Panthers who picked up Marquan McCall as one of their free agents. McCall came into the NFL Combine at 6-foot-3 and 342-pounds and looked every bit of it.
During his final season with Kentucky, McCall played in just seven games and had only nine tackles. Before that, he had just 48 tackles in three seasons with 10.5 going for a loss. While he never filled up a stat sheet, that’s also not what nose tackles usually do.
Their job is to do the dirty work, which involves eating up blocks, to allow the athletic defensive lineman — and linebackers — to go make the plays.
For McCall, it might not be incredibly easy to make the Panthers roster with Derrick Brown already in the mix but his ability to chew up blocks and clog gaps in the running game could prove to be very valuable. That’s why he has a good shot at making their 53-man roster.
