Kansas City Chiefs could regret letting Tyrann Mathieu walk

For the last three seasons, Tyrann Mathieu has been the heart and soul of the Kansas City Chiefs’ defense.

He hasn’t exactly been their best player — that distinction likely will go to Chris Jones who has been one of the most disruptive players in the entire league.

With that being said, Mathieu’s impact on the Chiefs’ defense has been undeniably huge.

In three seasons with Kansas City:

  • 213 total tackles
  • 8 tackles for loss
  • 6 QB hits
  • 3.0 sacks
  • 13 interceptions
  • 4 fumble recoveries

Mathieu helped deliver a Super Bowl title to the Kansas City Chiefs. He was such a crucial piece of their defense and did so much more than just fill up the stat sheet.

Now, Mathieu is off to the New Orleans Saints. He’ll get the chance to play for his hometown team and he’s understandably excited to do that.

The Chiefs maybe could have excused this as a financially motivated move but they went out and gave a big contract to Justin Reid.

Sure, Reid is younger than Mathieu, but sometimes there are intangible qualities a guy can bring to your defense that simply can’t be replaced by a younger player.

The Chiefs could undoubtedly regret letting go of Mathieu, who was not only productive but clutch.
