3 Green Bay Packers that could be cut before Week 1
The Green Bay Packers have a pretty loaded roster. Which players could be cut before week one of the 2022 NFL season rolls around?
The Green Bay Packers have one of the most talented rosters in the NFL heading into the 2022 season.
One of the things about having a deep and talented roster?
You’re going to have to make some cuts or trades you might not ultimately like.
Before Week 1 of the 2022 NFL season, which Green Bay Packers players could find themselves on the outside looking in? Here are some names to look out for on the cut or trade block.
Green Bay Packers cut candidate no. 3: Sammy Watkins, WR
The Green Bay Packers don’t have the best group of wide receivers in the NFL, by any means.
With that being said, the fact that they don’t have the best group of receivers in the NFL doesn’t guarantee former first-round pick Sammy Watkins a spot among the final crew they keep here.
Watkins is a classic offseason dart throw. It’s kind of crazy that his career hasn’t absolutely taken off as he’s played with multiple MVP quarterbacks already (Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson).
Now, he’ll get his shot with the back-to-back MVP Aaron Rodgers, and the Packers are certainly going to be starved for some help at the position with Davante Adams being traded to the Las Vegas Raiders.
So why might Watkins be a cut candidate?
Here’s a quick look at some of the other receivers vying for spots on the Packers’ roster this offseason:
- Allen Lazard
- Christian Watson
- Randall Cobb
- Juwann Winfree
- Amari Rodgers
- Romeo Doubs
- Samori Toure
Watkins could certainly make it over some of these other guys, but the Packers also might prefer to keep players like Winfree, Doubs, Rodgers, and Toure, all of whom have better long-term value to the team if they play at comparable levels to Watkins.
