Green Bay Packers cut candidate no. 1: Ty Summers, LB/ST

Even core special teams players may not be safe in the 2022 offseason for the Green Bay Packers.

By most standards, Ty Summers has been a great seventh-round pick investment for the Green Bay Packers.

He’s not only managed to crack the roster his first three NFL seasons, but he actually played some substantial snaps defensively in 2020.

Still, in three years with the Packers, Summers’ biggest impact has been made on special teams.

He’s averaging over 300 special teams snaps per season and has been a key contributor there for Green Bay.

Why might he be on the chopping block if he’s played such a crucial role?

Well, the Green Bay Packers had a pretty massive 2022 NFL Draft class which included a couple of players at Summers’ position.

First and foremost, the Packers used their top pick in this class on Georgia linebacker Quay Walker, who will likely push everyone one spot down the depth chart at linebacker as it is.

They also used a 7th-round pick on Georgia Tech’s Tariq Carpenter, and while that may not seem like the kind of pick that pushes a key special teams player off the roster, that might be exactly what Carpenter was drafted to do.

Summers’ special teams abilities certainly give him a shot at making this roster once again, but with the additions of Walker and Carpenter in this year’s draft, as well as the pick of Isaiah McDuffie in last year’s draft, the room at linebacker could be just slightly overcrowded.
