Off-the-wall Baker Mayfield destination no. 1: Denver Broncos
The Denver Broncos seem pretty set with their quarterback trio of Russell Wilson, Josh Johnson, and Brett Rypien for the time being, but I think this is a fun potential idea.
Russell Wilson has never really had a high-profile backup like Baker Mayfield in the NFL.
There could be a variety of reasons for that — why the Seahawks never really brought in bigger-name veterans behind Russ or why they never really drafted guys high to back him up — but it’s something to note, either way.
Wilson is a proven elite quarterback in the NFL and is someone that Baker Mayfield could learn a lot from.
Although Mayfield has his own way of going about his business as a quarterback, Russell Wilson is the type of field general and leader of a team that earns the respect of his teammates.
Mayfield has always been a fiery personality and backing up a quarterback like Russell Wilson could be a tremendous experience for him.
Not to mention, if Wilson has to miss any sort of extended period of time this season, Mayfield would be a much better alternative than what the Broncos already have.
This is a situation, similar to the one with Tom Brady, that could be beneficial for everyone involved. The biggest difference here is that the Broncos would have no long-term aims for Mayfield, but that doesn’t mean the juice wouldn’t be worth the squeeze.
If Mayfield were to leave in free agency in 2023, the Broncos could get a great compensatory pick in return.
This would be a fun short-term backup situation for the Broncos and good insurance if anything happens to Russ.
It would be a good situation for Mayfield to learn from one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.
It would be a beneficial situation for GM George Paton to recoup some draft capital with an in-season trade or perhaps a compensatory pick down the line.
Even if none of these situations come to pass, there’s merit to the idea of a lot of NFL teams trying to acquire Mayfield this season as he rehabs his stock for 2023.
