The Dallas Cowboys has a chance to win the NFC East division in the upcoming season. How much of a role will Dak Prescott play?

Leadership at the quarterback position is essential for success in the NFL. Without a reliable field general, teams must rely on other factors to bring them to victory. Jerry Jones and the Cowboys are one of the more fortunate franchises.

Dallas’ decision to invest in a quarterback during the 2016 draft will finally pay off this season.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted the right quarterback

While the Washington Commanders and Denver Broncos spent their off-season searching for a leader under center, the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff worked on this season’s game plan.

For years, Dallas has shuffled through offensive schemes that failed to correlate with their skillset. An important upcoming season has forced the franchise to buy into their quarterback.

Dak Prescott has shown that he is willing to work for a championship ring. His progress since taking his first snap as a professional shows in his stat line.

When Dallas asked their starting quarterback to throw more balls per game, Prescott stepped up to the challenge. In 2021, Dak finished with 410 completions – 55 more than his second-best season.

Making accurate passes has been something Prescott has worked on. Placing the football in the best spot for his receivers has helped the Cowboys gunslinger increase his touchdown total.

His 37 touchdowns and 10 interceptions ranked the Cowboys as the second-best passing offense in the league. The absence of Prescott’s favorite target, Amari Cooper, will make repeating last season’s successes more difficult.

CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup will have to fill Cooper’s shoes if the Cowboys want to see similar results.

Dak needs help from Cowboys’ rushing attack

An effective rushing attack would help Dallas’ quarterback run the offense efferently. After battling with injuries from previous seasons, the Cowboys believe Ezekiel Elliot is ready to increase his productivity.

His 1,002 rushing yards in 2021 finished as his second-lowest total in the last four years.

Rumors of Prescott contributing to the team’s ground game have sparked interest around Dallas’ organization.

Head Coach Mike McCarthy discussed the staff’s interest in incorporating their agile quarterback into their offensive scheme.

Russell Wilson and Patrick Mahomes have a reputation for extending plays with their legs – an idea Prescott will have to consider in the upcoming season.

Tucking the football and gaining extra yards is not too much of an ask from a quarterback who possesses athletic ability. Additional responsibility on Dak Prescott’s plate will be good for the two-time pro bowler who welcomes all challenges.
