Kansas City Chiefs: 3 best offseason additions in 2022
Kansas City Chiefs best addition in 2022: S Justin Reid (Houston Texans)
The decision not to bring back playmaking safety Tyrann Mathieu – now a member of the New Orleans Saints – was somewhat of a surprise considering his many contributions to the franchise.
In three seasons with the Chiefs, he earned Pro Bowl honors each year and was named All-Pro in both 2019 and 2020.
Mathieu totaled at least 60 tackles each season. He finished with 13 interceptions (2 returned for touchdowns), four fumble recoveries, three sacks and 27 passes defensed. Simply put, he was usually in the right place at the right time.
Now four-year pro Justin Reid, late of the Houston Texans, looks to fill that spot. He inked a three-year, $31.5 million deal with the club this offseason (via Spotrac). The 25-year-old defender joins a Chiefs’ secondary that has a slew of newcomers in rookies Trent McDuffie (1-Washington) and Bryan Cook (2b-Cincinnati), as well as veteran safety Deon Bush (Bears) and cornerback Lonnie Johnson – the latter via trade from Houston.
In four years with the Texans, the 2018 second-round pick from Stanford University amassed seven interceptions, three fumble recoveries and 23 passes defensed.
