Indianapolis Colts top pickup no. 2: QB Matt Ryan (Atlanta Falcons via trade)

The deal that sent 10-year pro Russell Wilson from the Seattle Seahawks to the Denver Broncos got most of the headlines this offseason when it came to quarterbacks changing teams.

While the Atlanta Falcons have slowly deteriorated in recent years and haven’t been to the playoffs since 2017, quarterback Matt Ryan has been a very consistent performer for the club and should thrive with a more talented team in Indianapolis

All told, the reliable four-time Pro Bowler and 2016 NFL MVP has this just three games in 14 seasons. And when he takes the field in Week 1 against the Houston Texans, he will become the sixth different quarterback to start for the Colts in their season opener since 2017.

Add in the fact that general manager Chris Ballard was able to obtain Ryan’s services for only a third-round draft choice could wind up making this one of the league’s bigger trade bargains in recent years.

It’s worth noting that while the Falcons failed to reach the playoffs each of the last four years, the steady signal-caller hit on 66.9 percent of his passes for a combined 17,939 yards, 107 scores, and just 44 interceptions.

Ryan was also sacked at least 40 times each of those seasons. But he also figures to be better protected by Frank Reich’s offensive line.
