Washington Commanders: Trading for Carson Wentz

Did the Washington Commanders need a new quarterback? Yes. Did they get someone who is going to put up decent numbers? Also yes. But did they get someone who is a true leader that can take them to the next level? That would be a no.

Carson Wentz was the No. 2 overall pick in 2016 for a reason. He’s got the size (6-foot-5, 237-pounds), mobility, and arm strength to do anything on the field asked of him. However, he’s now on his third team in as many seasons — and that happens for a reason.

Sure, some will point to his inability to stay healthy as one reason for him becoming a journeyman so early in his career, but there’s more to it than that. Before being traded by the Philadelphia Eagles, there were reports that Wentz was unliked in the locker room. That showed itself on the field as teammates rallied hard around Nick Foles when he would take over for Wentz and did the same for Jalen Hurts.

Wentz was then traded to the Indianapolis Colts and while his numbers looked good, the front office and coaching staff apparently regretted ever bringing him in. That’s why they quickly shipped him off to the Commanders, who are banking on their ability to fix his issues.

The problem is, that no coaching staff can force a team to respect the leader — and Wentz has had issues earning that respect.

Expecting things to suddenly change doesn’t usually work out, which is why this wasn’t a great move by Washington.
