Green Bay Packers top offseason pickup: DT Jarran Reed (Kansas City Chiefs)

As previously mentioned, the Packers’ defense made some strides in 2021 under new defensive coordinator Joe Barry. Just as was the case the previous season, the club allowed the ninth-fewest total yards in the league.

Even with pass-rusher Za’Darius Smith (now with the Vikings) missing the vast majority of the year, this group still came up with 39 sacks.

But stopping the run continues to be a sore spot for this team. And it has been an issue for quite a few years. Green Bay defenders allowed a mediocre 109.1 yards per game on the ground.

Once again, there were too many occasions when the Pack’s front-seven was overwhelmed by some of the league’s better offensive fronts.

But the addition of six-year interior presence Jarran Reed certainly bolsters Green Bay’s front seven according to defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery.

"Next to Kenny (Clark), next to Dean (Lowry), that’ll be pretty exciting. He’s been a dominant player in this league…And he brings a lot to the table – both in the run and in the pass. Jerry Montgomery"

If the Green Bay Packers are to return to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2010, their defense has to be a difference-making unit. That could start with the addition of Reed, who could make the club’s defensive front more formidable than it’s been in recent seasons.
