First-time Super Bowl contender no. 3: Los Angeles Chargers

13. Scouting Report. AFC West. Los Angeles Chargers. player. Pick Analysis. 2021 record: 9-8. 3

I hesitate to even put a team like the Los Angeles Chargers on a list like this.

Eventually, the Chargers have to graduate from being the “on paper” Super Bowl champs to the actual Super Bowl champs, right?

Eventually, they have to go from just winning the offseason to winning in the postseason, right?

I am not so sure anymore.

I have seen some incredible Chargers teams in my time. I imagine the Chargers are sort of like the Dan Marino of the 21st century.

Back when the Chargers had LaDainian Tomlinson, Antonio Gates, and Philip Rivers all in their prime, they were it in the AFC West. They were dominant for a long stretch of time.

Even in recent years, the preseason hype has always been there for the Chargers but they seem to always have one fatal flaw that keeps them from being true Super Bowl contenders.

Heading into the 2022 season, the Chargers are going to need a lot of things to fall their way if they are going to win their first Super Bowl in franchise history.

Justin Herbert is a good start.

The roster in Los Angeles is pretty strong top to bottom.

Unfortunately, what did the Chargers do to upgrade the right tackle position that cost them a shot at the playoffs last year in the season finale against the Raiders? How are they going to keep Herbert off the ground?

I’m not sold on the Chargers but I do think with the pieces they have in place, this is their best shot at a Super Bowl since those Tomlinson glory days.
