Best NFL matchup no. 5: Marlon Humphrey vs. Ja’Marr Chase

This matchup is hard to list as number #5 but these duos are incredibly hard to rank. So first up is Baltimore Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey versus one of the up-and-coming top receivers in the league, Cincinnati Bengal Jamarr Chase.

The two met up once during the 2021 season in Week 7 where the Bengals came out on top with a score of 41-17.

Chase in particular finished the day with 8 receptions logging 201 yards and a touchdown.

The long touchdown, 82 yards to be exact, was partially due to a missed tackle by Humphrey and one of their safeties.

Humphrey, arguably one of the best corners in the AFC, knew the responsibility was on his shoulders and he was unsuccessful in locking down the Bengals’ rookie receiver.

"We do have to play better in the secondary, for sure. Going into this week, the biggest assignment was on me to kind of stop their top guy, and I lost that matchup. So, a lot of it, kind of, is on me. I’ve just got to play better, especially when the gameplan is for me to have a big day. The coaches put the trust in me to kind of lead the defense, lead the gameplan, [and] I’ve just got to execute better. Marlon Humphrey"

The Bengals beat the Ravens in both of their matchups and made their way to the Super Bowl. The Ravens missed the playoffs and Humphrey never got a chance to redeem himself as he sustained an injury prior to the second matchup.

In 2022 expect a healthy Humphrey to come out strong against the second-year sensation. Chase himself will work to maintain his excellent record of torching the Ravens’ secondary and we will see if Humphrey and co. are up to the challenge.
