Surprising potential last place NFL team no. 2: Kansas City Chiefs

124. Scouting Report. AFC West. Kansas City Chiefs. player. Pick Analysis. AFC. 2

I can already feel the torch and pitchforks of Chiefs Kingdom coming for me for this one.

We’re just having a discussion here, remember.

The Kansas City Chiefs are now one of four teams in what I think many would argue is the best overall division in football.

Am I absolutely convinced this team is going to finish in last place in the AFC West? Absolutely not.

Do I think the AFC West could have four playoff teams in 2022? Absolutely yes.

That may seem far-fetched given the overall depth of the AFC as a whole, but it’s not out of the question. I think last place in the AFC West is going to be nine or 10 wins this season, so Chiefs fans don’t have to worry too much — it’s not like I’m predicting this team to have a losing record or something crazy.

But the Chiefs, out of all teams in the AFC West, were the only ones that arguably got worse in 2022.

The move to swap Tyrann Mathieu with Justin Reid? Didn’t like that.

The trade of Tyreek Hill? That certainly isn’t helpful for anyone other than the Chiefs’ salary cap.

Losing Charvarius Ward could be getting massively underrated, although I do love the Trent McDuffie pickup for the Chiefs.

Let’s be real — pushing the Chiefs out of the top spot in the AFC West is going to be hard enough. Pushing them all the way down to last place? Over 17 games?

Borderline impossible, but the QB talent is now there in the AFC West to do exactly that.

Again, finishing in last place in the AFC West could be the difference of being 10-7 and losing tiebreakers with other teams while the first-place team is 12-5 or something like that.

It’s going to be tight all year.

But the possibility exists that the Chiefs could finish fourth place in this division regardless of how much fans will hate the idea. Is it likely? Not with Patrick Mahomes under center. Is it possible this team could finish two games worse than we saw a year ago?

Yes.
