The Raiders have been advocates for social change and their commitment to diversity has been obvious in their history. Owner Mark Davis made another historic move on July 7, 2022, when he announced the new team president.

The Las Vegas Raiders announced on July 7, 2022, that they have hired Sandra Douglass Morgan as the new team president. Morgan is the first black female president in NFL history, let alone within the Raiders’ history.

In Morgan’s previous role she was also the first black female to serve as the Control Board’s chair in Las Vegas.

Mark Davis’ father, Al Davis, who passed away in 2011, was constantly at the forefront of social justice movements.

In 1963 the Raiders were scheduled to play in a preseason game in Mobile, Alabama. However, Davis refused to play in the game due to segregation laws banning white and black players from staying in the same hotel.

Davis wasn’t done; throughout his time as the owner of the Raiders, he drafted the first black quarterback (Eldridge Dickey), hired the first black head coach (Art Shell), and hired the first female CEO, Amy Trask.

While the list of accomplishments belongs to Al Davis and his staff, his son Mark Davis is getting it done his way.

Just a month ago Mark Davis provided castaway quarterback Colin Kaepernick an opportunity to have a private workout for the team; the first Kaepernick has been offered by an individual franchise.

Sandra Douglass Morgan enters the Raiders headquarters in a time of turmoil following the Jon Gruden email scandal and the controversial dismissal of interim team president Dan Ventrelle. Morgan however seems prepared for her new challenge;

"“Let me be clear – I am not here to avoid or sidestep problems or concerns that need to be addressed,” Morgan said. “I’ve given long and thoughtful consideration to joining you, and I’ve done so because I believe in the promise of the Raiders. Most importantly, I believe in your core values of integrity, community, and commitment to excellence. I will expect you to embody those and to hold me accountable to doing the same.”"

Regardless of the events that transpired within the past year Mark Davis is making positive moves within the organization. Anyone that believes in progressive civil rights should applaud the hire and wish Morgan the best of luck moving forward as a leader of the Las Vegas Raiders.
