The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to be one of the best teams in the NFL in 2022, but could they seriously disappoint fans in 2022?

The AFC is going to be a gauntlet in 2022, and no one is immune to regression, not even the mighty Kansas City Chiefs.

Let’s make one thing very clear — the Kansas City Chiefs have one good reason why they won’t regress in 2022, and his name is Patrick Mahomes.

The Chiefs’ superstar quarterback is the type of player who can will his team to victory no matter who is around him on the roster, but I do think we’re going to see Mahomes in a unique situation in that regard in 2022.

As we will explore with every first-place team from last year, let’s take a look at a few reasons why the Kansas City Chiefs will disappoint their fans in 2022.

Reason no. 4 Kansas City Chiefs will disappoint: The loss of Tyrann Mathieu looms large

It feels like the disappointment from this move should have already set in at this point.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a somewhat shocking decision to not bring back Tyrann Mathieu in favor of a player like Justin Reid.

Reid had shown signs of regression with the Texans the last couple of years while Mathieu had consistently proven himself to be a catalyst for a lot of the Chiefs’ defensive success in the last three seasons, picking off 13 passes, recovering four fumbles, and scoring a pair of defensive touchdowns.

He was selected as an All-Pro twice, and now he will get the chance to play for his hometown New Orleans Saints with the Chiefs moving on.

Sure, Mathieu turned 30 this year. Maybe the Chiefs will end up looking wise for letting him go. My guess is, however, that not having Mathieu in the lineup will cost them more than it helps.
