The initial omission of Trent Williams in the Washington Commanders’ “90 Greatest” list was humiliating

The Washington Commanders are currently making a “90 Greatest” list of, you guessed it, the 90 greatest players in franchise history. And the fun part is, fans get a chance to contribute to the list.

This ended up being a very good thing because Washington (in classic franchise fashion) didn’t do the right thing. Trent Williams was somehow not an option for fans to vote for.

There were a few omissions. None were as glaring, or petty, as the Williams one though.

The end of his time in Washington was messy. Williams sat out, but for good reason. He found out that the team was negligent when it came to his health, and it was potentially life-threatening.

So you can forgive the superstar left tackle if he wasn’t exactly thrilled with the franchise.

This led to Washington trading Williams to the San Francisco 49ers back in 2020. There, he’s continued to be the best offensive lineman in football.

What was his Washington career like though? Williams their first-round pick (fourth overall) back in 2010. From there, Williams immediately became a star.

In his nine seasons with Washington, he made the Pro Bowl seven times. He was never a First Team All-Pro somehow, but I’m going to chalk that down to the media never really taking Washington very seriously.

Williams was a captain (for a long time). He’s also one of the greatest offensive linemen in NFL history. Putting him in the “Greatest 90” for Washington seems like an absolute no-brainer.

So the best-case scenario for the initial omission is someone being very stupid and forgetting a GOAT that played with the team for nine seasons.

The worst-case scenario is the team being extremely petty and keeping him off the list because they’re still salty he wanted to leave.

Now, they did end up putting Williams in the pool of players to vote on. They added Robert Griffin III as well. That could have also been an omission of pettiness.

It’s less glaring, but that rookie year should be enough to at least get him consideration. Williams however, is not just “Greatest 90” – he’s near the top of that list.

The Commanders are no strangers to controversy. It’s just sad that they can’t even get through something that should be fun for the fans and a way to honor players without embarrassing themselves.

Trent Williams is one of the greatest players in franchise history. And he should be honored for that.
