NFL RB no. 5: David Montgomery, Chicago Bears

There isn’t a lot to look forward to if you’re a Chicago Bears fan, but there is David Montgomery.

Matt Eberflus comes from a team that found success by relying on the running game, the Colts. Montgomery is a good back who can become great in the right scheme.

Not much is known about Luke Getsy except that he comes from the Shanahan tree. We saw the success of Deebo Samuel and the 49ers’ running game as a unit last season. Another thing working in Montgomery’s favor is Justin Fields, who is looking to take a step in a positive direction.

Getsy’s job will be to maximize what Fields does well and minimize his mistakes — that’s where Montgomery comes in. Fields can run, which will open up the offense for Montgomery.

He’s a powerful runner who set the tone for an offense still looking to establish its identity. They’ll have to be a running team first to help their quarterback.

As of now, they don’t have any notable wideouts, so Montgomery will get plenty of carries. He’s also a solid safety blanket out of the backfield — expect him to haul in 50+ catches.

Montgomery should stand out as one of the better young running backs, even if the Bears struggle.
