NFL RB no. 3: Javonte Williams, Denver Broncos

Splitting carries with Melvin Gordon hindered Javonte Williams in his rookie season. The backs split their carries evenly with 203, but Williams looked like the better back.

He proved he can carry the volume back against the Cowboys, where he carried the ball 17 times for over 100 yards. He did so again against the Chiefs with 23 carries for 102 yards.

The sample size is small, but Williams is a powerful runner who does a great job after contact. He’s creative in short areas and sets up the linebackers.

Having Russell Wilson loosen up the defense. Williams will never have to worry about playing against eight-man fronts. The Denver Broncos will have a chance to play with leads, which means Williams will see more opportunities, especially in the red zone.

Williams’ violent running style is similar to a running back Russell Wilson had in Seattle, Marshawn Lynch.

One difference is, that Williams is more reliable as a pass catcher. He caught 43 passes last year, so he’ll probably see a few more come his way.

If the Broncos are going to find success with Rus, Williams will have to be the focal point of an offense in need of an identity. Expect the second-year pro to rush for over 1,200 yards and double-digit touchdowns.
