NFL rookie #4: Kenny Pickett, QB, Steelers

It is never a great sign when a draft class sees most of their quarterbacks taken go in the third round or later. A position that is always over-drafted, 2022 saw a quarterback class struggle to gain much traction.

The only quarterback to go early was Kenny Pickett, and because of this, he will have to prove that the decision to take him in the first was justified.

Pickett was the most pro-ready of the quarterbacks in this class. While that won’t lock him into a starting job right away, odds are he see’s some playing time during his rookie season unless Mitchell Trubisky really shines.

While a few rookie mistakes will be tolerated, Pickett needs to look the part of a pro quarterback, or else he will have the bust label prematurely attributed to him.

No other quarterback was taken in the first two rounds besides Pickett. A third-round quarterback flaming out isn’t uncommon and won’t be as devastating as a first-round quarterback busting.

Whenever Pickett sees the field for the Steelers, he needs to come out firing. If not, he will quickly get lumped in with the numerous other first-round quarterbacks that failed to develop.
