NFL players holding out at camp: Jessie Bates, S, Bengals

Here we have our last true hold out who is probably seeking a contract similar to what safety Derwin James is after.

Bengals safety Jessie Bates did not show up for training camp on July 26, 2022, and the team will certainly be hurting without their star defender.

Bates is also in a unique position as his negotiating time with the Bengals front office is past the point of well…negotiation.

Bengals owner Mike Brown has acknowledged Bates’ contribution to the team as a dynamic defensive player that helped secure them a spot in the 2021 Super Bowl. Regardless, Brown is not ready to play ball with Bates contract-wise until the season has concluded;

"“He fits with us,” Brown said, via Charlie Goldsmith of the Cincinnati Enquirer. “We were two years trying to extend him. We weren’t able to get there. I regret that we didn’t. We will have another chance at the end of the season.”"

Bates has refused to sign his franchise tag extension which would have given him a salary of $12,911,000. If Mike Brown sticks to his word and Bates continues to refuse to show up at camp we may see a trade in the near future.
