Why the New York Giants are a fit for Jimmy Garoppolo

The San Francisco 49ers have unceremoniously moved on from Jimmy Garoppolo. Here’s why he could be a perfect fit for the New York Giants.

Kyle Shanahan recently said that the team has turn its keys over to Trey Lance, meaning the Jimmy Garoppolo era in San Francisco has ended.

Trey Lance was the third overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft and essentially took a redshirt year in his rookie season.

Obviously, if a player is drafted that high, they’re going to play very soon after getting drafted.

The team looks poised to begin the Trey Lance era, which means the 49ers will work with Jimmy Garoppolo and his agency to find the right fit for the signal caller.

Jimmy Garoppolo is a polarizing player.  Some think he is indeed a franchise quarterback, as they site his two NFC Championship game appearances and one Super Bowl appearance as reasons why.

Others think that Garoppolo was simply benefitting from being in a QB-friendly offense.  Whatever your take may be, he isn’t likely to take another snap in a 49ers uniform and is probably going to be a starter somewhere in 2022.

There aren’t a ton of logical fits for Jimmy G, but there is one fit that makes the most sense, and that’s on the east coast as a member of the New York Football Giants.

Jimmy Garoppolo has won 33 of the 47 games he has started during his NFL career.  The Giants have had one winning record in the past nine seasons and have not made the playoffs in years.  The Giants have been one of the worst teams in the NFL over the last decade and simply need an infusion of hope.

Garoppolo isn’t Russell Wilson, but there is evidence that the guy just wins.  He wins 70% of his starts and has a 4-2 playoff record.

Also, the NFC East appears to be wide open as well.  The Cowboys got worse, but I think the Commanders and Eagles got better.

However, both the Commanders and Eagles do have questions about their quarterback situation.  It’s clear that the QB will make or break each team’s success in 2022, and even though Jalen Hurts’ ceiling may be very high, there is always a chance he simply does not reach it.

Carson Wentz is essentially on his last straw to prove himself as a starting quarterback in the NFL.

Garoppolo would come into the NFC East and instantly become the second-best quarterback in the division.  The Giants also have a solid roster, in my opinion.

They improved their offensive line, which was a horribly weak unit in 2021, by drafting Evan Neal, and signing Mark Glowinski and Jon Feliciano, two solid interior players.

The offensive line has some new life put into it, and their receiving core features Kenny Golladay, Darius Slayton, Kadarius Toney, and rookie Wan’Dale Robinson.  I am also encouraged by their defensive players as well.

Also, with a new GM and coaching staff in town, there is really no obligation to start Daniel Jones if the team thinks they can be appreciably better with Garoppolo under center.

I think this is a logical fit, and one that needs to happen, soon.
